Seychelles: Served His Country with Honour and Dedication: President Pays Last Respects to Sergeant O’Neal Franchette

President of the Republic of Seychelles, Dr Patrick Herminie, in his capacity as Commander-in-Chief, accompanied by Vice President Mr Sébastien Pillay, paid their last respects to Sergeant O’Neal Franchette during his funeral ceremony at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception earlier this afternoon.

The funeral service was conducted by Deacon Louis Agathine, Chaplain of the Seychelles Defence Forces.

Sergeant Franchette served the Seychelles Defence Forces with honour, determination and dedication for 14 years, having joined the Force on 18 May 2012. Throughout his military career, he undertook a wide range of specialised training and progressively took on greater responsibilities, serving in various leadership and instructional roles.

He was promoted to the rank of Sergeant in November 2023, having previously served as a Second-in-Command Team Leader, Team Leader and Instructor within the Special Operations Unit.

Beyond his professional training and leadership responsibilities, Sergeant Franchette participated in various military deployments and operations, including maritime and joint special operations. He also represented Seychelles in international training and engagements with foreign military forces, consistently demonstrating his skills, professionalism and commitment to service.

Most recently, he participated in a training programme in Réunion in July, where he formed part of the Seychelles contingent that took part in the French National Day parade on 14 July marking the first time Seychelles was represented at the parade. His contribution during the training was also recognised by the French military authorities, who conveyed their condolences following his passing.

Remembered by his colleagues, those under his command and his superiors as a dedicated soldier, a respected leader and a person who brought warmth and humour to those around him, his passing is a profound loss to his family and to the Seychelles Defence Forces, particularly the Special Operations Unit.

Also in attendance at the funeral were former President Wavel Ramkalawan, Chief of Defence Forces, Major General Michael Rosette, accompanied by Deputy Chief of Defence Forces, Brigadier Jean Attala, and Chief of Staff, Colonel Michael Hollanda.

The Office of the President extends its deepest condolences to the family, friends and colleagues of Sergeant O’Neal Franchette.
